Join ICC for a celebration commemorating the dedication of the Statue of Liberty on Saturday, October 28. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the steps of the Cortland Post Office, 88 Main Street in Cortland. Come sing The National Anthem and America the Beautiful with us, and hear a reading of “The New Colossus,” a poem by Emma Lazarus inscribed on the statue pedestal. Community members will share personal stores, and a children’s book on the Statue of Liberty will be shared by Homer village librarian Priscilla Berggren-Thomas.
Saturday marks the 131st anniversary of the statue’s dedication led by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the United States. The Statue of Liberty represents freedom and liberty and is a symbol of the United States as a welcoming nation.
We’ll continue celebrating our liberty after the 28th–we welcome you to join us for small but fun and impactful projects coming up. Please speak with organizers at the event, or call Paula Davidson at 607- 756-7508 for more information.
